Latest Block

What this is​

Latest Block tells you where a network is right now. You ask Cognivo Chat about a network, and it reports the block that network has just produced.

Every EVM network moves forward one block at a time, and the newest block is the network's clock. If you want to know how current a piece of data is, or whether a network is still producing blocks, this is the quickest way to check.

When to use it​

  • You want to know the current block height on Ethereum, Base, BNB Chain, or Robinhood Chain.
  • You are reading a report or a transaction receipt and want to work out how many blocks ago something happened.
  • Someone quoted a block number to you and you want to see how far behind the head it is.
  • You want a simple check that a network is still moving.

What you get back​

Cognivo replies with the current block on the network you named, which is:

  • Block number, the height of the newest block.
  • Block hash, the unique identifier of that block.
  • Timestamp, when that block was produced.

Where a block explorer link is available, Cognivo includes it so you can open the same block yourself and compare.

The answer is a snapshot of the moment you asked. Ethereum, Base, BNB Chain and Robinhood Chain all keep producing blocks, so the number will already have moved on by the time you read it. Ask again for a fresh reading.

If Cognivo cannot reach the network at that moment, it says so rather than guessing. An unavailable answer means Cognivo could not read the head block right then. It does not mean the network has stopped. Wait a moment and ask again, and try naming the network explicitly if you left it out.

The important limitation​

This tool reports the head block only. It will not fetch an arbitrary block by number, so a request like "summarise block 19000000" is outside what it can answer today. If you need detail about a specific historical block, work from the transactions in it instead and use Looking Up a Transaction with a transaction hash.

Latest Block also describes the block as a container. It does not list the transactions inside the block, and it does not tell you what those transactions did.
