How Memories Work
This page explains how the AI uses your stored memories, how storage limits are tracked, and how to control memory reference.
How the AI Uses Memories
At the start of each conversation, the AI can access your stored memories and use them when composing responses. You do not need to reference them explicitly — the AI draws on them automatically where relevant.
When the AI creates, updates, or deletes a memory during a conversation, a memory update indicator appears inline in the message thread. Click it to expand and see what changed.
Storage Usage
Memories use a token budget. The Memories panel shows a circular usage indicator:
| Indicator | Usage level |
|---|---|
| Green | Below 75% |
| Yellow | Between 75% and 90% |
| Red | Above 90% |
If you approach the limit, delete memories that are no longer relevant to free up space. See Creating & Editing Memories for how to delete.
Turning Off Memory Reference
If you want the AI to stop using your memories without deleting them, use the Use Memory toggle in the Memories panel. Turning this off disables memory reference for future conversations — your memories remain stored and can be re-enabled at any time by toggling it back on.
This is useful when you want to have a conversation without the AI drawing on saved context.
